Axar.az informs citing AA.
Two gunmen on a motorbike opened fire on Fahad bin Ali Jaber, the head of criminal investigation department in Shibam district in the province, and fled the scene unscathed, the official said on condition of anonymity because he was unauthorized to speak to media.
He said Jaber was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
Tuesday’s assassination came one day after unidentified gunmen shot dead a Yemeni soldier in Seoon town in Hadhramaut.
Hadhramaut has seen a spate of attacks targeting local officials and security personnel, for which al-Qaeda group claimed responsibility.
Since 2015, Al-Qaeda group has maintained an active presence in the province, mostly, in Al-Qutn directorate.
Yemen has remained locked in a devastating civil war since Houthi rebels overran much of the country, including capital Sanaa, in 2014.
