Zakharova pointed that given Obama's recent remarks about interference in other countries’ internal affairs, the US president might want to apologize to Viktor Yanukovich.

US President Barack Obama could apologize to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich given his recent statement in which he said that interference in other countries’ internal affairs was unacceptable, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova wrote on her Facebook page.

Zakharova pointed that during an interview with US radio station NPR Obama said: "I think there's no doubt that when any foreign government tries to impact on the integrity of our elections, that we need to take action and we will, at a time and a place of our own choosing." Thus Obama commented on the alleged Russian hackers’ attacks on US political institutions.

"Maybe he should apologize to Yanukovich now?" the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman wrote.

On Thursday, Yanukovich testified at Moscow’s Dorogomilovsky District Court during proceedings on a lawsuit filed by former Ukrainian MP Vladimir Oleinik to recognize the 2014 ‘Maidan’ protests in Ukraine as a state coup. Yanukovich said that during the ‘Maidan’ events a coordination center had been set up at the US embassy in Kiev. He also said that the western countries had tried to persuade him to sign the EU association agreement, which, according to the former president, was not consistent with Ukraine’s national interests.
