Unrest breaks out at Greek island refugee camp

A riot broke out at the Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos on Monday afternoon, local sources told.

Axar.az reports that a volunteer at a refugee facility on the island, speaking anonymously, said clashes broke out when a group of migrants protested about conditions at the overcrowded camp and ended up burning a number of tents.

Police tried to break up the angry crowd but were pelted with stones. Officers then responded with teargas.

Local media broadcast pictures showing smoke billowing from a number of burning tents.

Moria camp has seen previous outbreaks of anger by refugees and migrants, furious over what they say are a lack of facilities to house the thousands of people stranded there.
