Russia to provide response to possible US visa delay

Russia will take reciprocal diplomatic measures if the US embassy in Russia decides to increase the time necessary the process entry visas for Russian citizens, Igor Morozov, a member of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs.

Axar.az reports citing Sputnik.

The US Embassy in Russia said earlier in the day that it does not rule out the possibility that the forced reduction of the staff of the US diplomatic missions could lead to a slowdown of consular activities in the country.

"Obviously, if such a slowdown in visa issuance takes place, the reason will certainly not be the personnel cuts. So Russia is ready for reciprocal diplomatic measures. As it is customary in diplomatic practice, the time for issuing Russian visas to Americans will also be increased," Morozov said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday that the diplomatic presence of the United States in Russia would be decreased by 755 employees.

Last week, both chambers of the US Congress approved a bill introducing economic sanctions on Russia, with the White House stating that President Donald Trump is intending to sign the bill into law.

In December 2016, Washington adopted sanctions targeting Russia over its alleged interference in the US presidential election, something which Moscow has repeatedly denied, expelling 35 Russian diplomats and seizing two diplomatic compounds used by Russia.
