Poroshenko calls on European partners to abandon Nord Stream-2

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has called on European partners to abandon the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project.

Axar.az reports citing UNIAN, "Nord Stream-2 is a 'Trojan horse' of the Kremlin against European energy and, ultimately, geopolitical security," he wrote on Facebook. The president says the refusal to implement the project within the framework of the Third Energy Package of the EU and deliberate failure of Gazprom to implement the decisions of the Stockholm Arbitration on cases with Ukraine – these are clear and unambiguous signals about the true motives of the gas pipeline and its potential catastrophic consequences for the European Union.

"I call on our European partners to get rid of the deceptive and destructive Kremlin spell as soon as possible and firmly defend their own energy security," Poroshenko said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, in late July, Petro Poroshenko and newly appointed U.S. Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Energy Resources Francis Fannon have coordinated approaches and practical measures of the Ukrainian and American sides in countering the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

Meanwhile, Germany-based Uniper, one of Gazprom's European partners in the construction of Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline bypassing Ukraine, has announced that the pipes start being laid in the Baltic Sea.
