The number of deaths due to floods caused by tropical cyclone Idai in Mozambique and Zimbabwe has reached at least 166 people.

Earlier, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies reported that it estimated that about 150 people had died as a result of cyclone Idai in Malawi, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. Local authorities warn that these data are not final and the number of victims is likely to increase.
Moreover, it is reported that Beira, the second largest city of Mozambique, and its suburbs are 90% destroyed by the cyclone. Beira airport was closed for several days after the cyclone destroyed the control tower.
“The scale of devastation is enormous,” Jamie LeSueur, who is leading an International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent assessment team in Beirak, said. “It seems that 90 percent of the area is completely destroyed.”

The rainy season in Mozambique begins in October and lasts until March, each year floods cause loss of life and destruction. In 2015, the disaster in this country killed more than 110 people and 150 thousand were injured.
