Axar.az presents the statement of Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration, to the local press:
- How do you assess the recent talks between Turkey and Greece on the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean?
- The Republic of Azerbaijan supports relations between the countries based on mutually beneficial cooperation, stability and security. The current situation in the Eastern Mediterranean region is a cause for concern. Negotiations are especially important at a time when the global fight against the coronavirus pandemic is in full swing. In this regard, we welcome the talks between brotherly Turkey and Greece through NATO. We also believe that a dialogue and direct discussions between the parties without preconditions will help reduce tensions and find appropriate solutions. Azerbaijan is ready to contribute to this issue if necessary.
Armenia's attempts to intervene in the issue as a catalyst, confusing the Mediterranean with Lake Sevan, whose historical name is Lake Goycha, are simply ridiculous. As usual, Armenia is trying to deal with issues that do not concern it. A state like Armenia, which has committed aggression against Azerbaijan in gross violation of international law and the UN Charter, has no moral right to speak about international law.
It would be good if Armenia, living with the dream of creating a "Greater Armenia from sea to sea", finally understands that it is a landlocked country. Rather than living in the fantasies of the Mediterranean, as a landlocked country, Armenia must realize that it can take advantage of regional communications and transport if it puts an end to its policy of aggression against Azerbaijan.
