Russian boxer Sergey Kovalev has been charged with a felony assault for allegedly punching a woman and, if found guilty, faces up to four years in prison, TMZ sports web portal announced on Friday.

Axar.az reports citing Russian media.

TMZ reported that the Russian boxer was detained in the Californian city of Big Bear on June 9 after a woman told police that Kovalev allegedly punched her in the head causing "a severely broken nose, a concussion and a displaced disk in her neck."

According to the woman, the 35-year-old Russian boxer tried to get her attention at a party, but she rejected his courtship. She claims that after she left the party Kovalev and his friend followed her to a cabin, where the alleged attack took place.

The Russian fighter has already appeared in a US court, according to TMZ, and submitted a not-guilty plea. He is expected to be back in court on in March.

Kovalev, nicknamed ‘Krusher,’ has a record of 32 wins (28 KOs); 3 defeats (2 KOs) and 1 draw. He is scheduled to fight his next bout against Colombia’s Eleider Alvarez 24 wins (12 KOs) later in the year in Frisco, Texas.
