During a telephone conversation with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed the importance of maintaining the Montreux agreement against the backdrop of Ankara's plans to build the Canal Istanbul.

Axar.az reports that the Kremlin's press service reported.

"In connection with Turkey's plans to build the Canal Istanbul, Russia stressed the importance of maintaining the current regime of the Black Sea Straits in order to ensure regional stability and security in accordance with the provisions of the Montreux Convention," the statement said.
