This is another clear attempt by the Belarusian authorities to silence the opposition.

Axar.az reports that the statement came from EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.

He stressed the need to investigate the incident to determine whether it violated international aviation rules.

"Today's situation will be raised at a meeting of the EU Council. The European Union will assess the consequences of the incident, including taking action against the perpetrators."

Borrell demanded the immediate release of Protasevich.
