Three countries played key role in securing ceasefire

Three countries, Pakistan, Turkiye, and China, played a key role in securing the ceasefire, consistently urging both sides to halt the war and begin negotiations.

Axar.az reports that political analyst Elkhan Shahinoglu commented on the two-week ceasefire agreement reached today between the U.S. and Iran.

He noted that talks could take place in Pakistan to finalize the agreement.

“Islamabad is among the countries most concerned about the continuation of the war. There are several reasons for this: Pakistan is a military-political ally of Saudi Arabia, armed Baloch groups seeking to exploit the conflict could become active, and Pakistan’s Shia Muslim community staged protests after the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, chanting slogans against the U.S. and Israel.”

Shahinoglu added that Beijing also sought to end the conflict. According to AP, China convinced Tehran to agree to a ceasefire with the U.S. However, Bloomberg reports that China believes Washington’s desire to control Iranian oil sales remains, targeting Chinese interests. Under the ceasefire agreement, the U.S. will not prevent Iran from selling its oil. Opening the Strait of Hormuz to tanker traffic is also strategically important for China, which aims to increase its oil reserves to ensure that conflicts elsewhere in the world do not deplete its energy resources.

The analyst suggested that both Beijing and Moscow are likely to support restoring Iran’s pre-war military capabilities.

“Iran will try to acquire military equipment from Russia and China instead of relying solely on oil revenues. However, the air defense systems Iran purchased from China last year failed during the initial days of the conflict, as the U.S. and Israel destroyed them.”
