Baku lodges protest with Germany over Der Spiegel report

Azerbaijan has protested against Germany over the German publication Der Spiegel mentioning Azerbaijan in connection with an investigation into former head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND) August Hanning, АPA reported, citing diplomatic sources.

Axar.az informs that, according to the information, Azerbaijan, through its special services and diplomatic channels, conveyed its protest on the matter both to the Office of the German Chancellor and to the German Foreign Ministry.

It should be noted that the German publication Der Spiegel, citing sources, mentioned Azerbaijan in an investigation into former head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND) August Hanning. The publication alleged that while heading Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND) from 1998 to 2005, August Hanning spied in favor of Azerbaijan, prepared certain classified reports and handed them over to the Azerbaijani side.

It should also be added that the Media and Broadcasting Council issued a statement on the matter.
