Cambodian first lady visits Baku's Old City

On October 13, Pich Chanmony, First Lady of the Kingdom of Cambodia, visited Icherisheher, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Axar.az reports that she began her tour at the Maiden Tower, where she was briefed on its construction history and architectural features.

The Maiden Tower, dating back to the 7th–6th centuries BC, was restored in the 12th century. Standing 28 metres tall and measuring 16–16.5 metres in diameter, it consists of a cylindrical main tower and a large supporting structure attached to its southern side. The guest was briefed on the monument’s internal structure, historical functions, and archaeological finds.

During the tour, Cambodia’s First Lady was briefed on the history and significance of the Icherisheher State Historical-Architectural Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the ongoing renovation, improvement, and restoration work there. Icherisheher preserves rare historical and architectural monuments dating back to different periods.

She also visited the Dastan brand at the Icherisheher Traditional Arts Centre, where she learned about projects to preserve and promote Azerbaijan’s national heritage and viewed various handicrafts and works of art. During the visit, the First Lady of Cambodia also showcased her artistic talents..

Pich Chanmony was presented with an Icherisheher-themed kelaghayi by the Zadagan brand and a wooden miniature of Icherisheher during her visit to the BukharArt art space.

She also visited the Shirvanshahs’ Palace Complex, a masterpiece of medieval Eastern architecture and a historical monument of international significance. Built in the early 15th century, the complex stands at the highest point of one of Icherisheher’s hills and is clearly visible from the Caspian Sea and the surrounding heights. It has preserved its historical and architectural significance to this day. During the visit, she was presented with a painting by the Dastan brand.

During the tour, Pich Chanmony was also introduced to Azerbaijan’s first Teapot Treasury Museum, which showcases a unique collection reflecting the richness of global tea culture and the domestic and artistic traditions of different peoples.

A key feature of the project is the fusion of global tea culture with Azerbaijan’s centuries-old hospitality traditions. Alongside the samovar and pear-shaped glass, iconic elements of Azerbaijani tea culture, the exhibition features a 3,400-year-old clay samovar discovered in the Sheki area, highlighting the deep roots of the country’s tradition of brewing tea with thyme, mint, and various spices.
