Azerbaijan, UN discuss cooperation and global issues

On November 6, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov met with Li Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, who is visiting Azerbaijan.

Axar.az reports, citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that the meeting focused on the current state and prospects of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UN, Azerbaijan’s contributions to multilateral diplomacy, and key issues on the global and regional agenda.

The sides commended Azerbaijan’s active engagement with the UN and its efforts to address global challenges. Particular emphasis was placed on Azerbaijan’s chairmanships, initiatives, high-level events and achievements within the Non-Aligned Movement, COP29, the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), the World Urban Forum (WUF), and other international platforms.

They also highlighted the successful hosting of the UN Governance Innovation Summit in Azerbaijan on November 5–6, noting the country’s efforts to promote its experience in innovative public administration, particularly the ASAN Khidmet model, internationally and facilitate its adoption by other countries.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov provided an overview of Azerbaijan’s contribution to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, its national initiatives, and the country’s donor and humanitarian efforts in support of the international development agenda.

The sides underscored the importance of expanding regional cooperation between Azerbaijan and Central Asian countries within the C6 format, with a focus on transport and logistics connectivity, the Middle Corridor, trade and investment, energy security, green energy, and digital transformation.

Jeyhun Bayramov also outlined Azerbaijan’s large-scale reconstruction efforts in the liberated territories, the return of former internally displaced persons, infrastructure development, and economic reintegration. He also drew attention to the serious challenges posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance left behind as a result of Armenia’s occupation.

The discussions also covered pressing global and regional challenges, international peace and security, ways to promote economic and social development, and other matters of mutual interest on the UN agenda.
