President Donald Trump will shortly announce that the US is withdrawing from the 2015 Paris climate agreement, US media reports.

He had promised voters he would take the step during last year's presidential election campaign.

Mr Trump said it would help his country's oil and coal industries.

His opponents say withdrawing from the accord would be an abdication of American leadership on a pressing international challenge.

Earlier, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres again appealed to Mr Trump not to break the commitment.

He said that as the world's largest economy, US support was crucial.
