British prime minister Boris Johnson is due to meet German chancellor Angela Merkel today as he begins a series of meetings across Europe in a bid to reopen negotiations over the UK’s exit from the European Union.
Axar.az reports citing The National that Once the pomp and pageantry of Mr. Johnson’s first overseas visit as prime minister are over, his case for a renegotiation of Britain’s divorce deal with the EU is not likely to receive a particularly warm reception from Ms. Merkel.
EU leaders have roundly rejected the British leader’s proposal that the thorny issue of the Irish backstop is dropped from the EU withdrawal agreement. Mr. Johnson’s letter to the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, on Monday outlining the UK’s position met a marked lack of enthusiasm.
The UK Prime Minister will meet other world leaders at the G7 summit in Biarritz in France on Saturday, where he hopes to push his Brexit agenda further. He has said Britain will leave the EU on October 31 no matter what.
