Call from Azerbaijan to UNESCO on Armenia

As it is known at the meeting held in a video format on February 4, of the current year, with the participation of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, President of France Emanuel Macron, President of the European Union Charles Michele and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, an agreement was reached about the UNESCO to send separate missions to Azerbaijan and Armenia, the press service of Azerbaijani MFA told APA.

Axar.az reports that according to the Ministry, the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs tries to distort the agreement reached on the visits of the UNESCO missions to Azerbaijan and Armenia. We condemn Armenian MFA for once again avoiding the commitments of this state.

"Regarding the UNESCO technical mission to be implemented in the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani side welcomed the implementation of this mission from the first day. All preparation works for the mission were agreed between Azerbaijan and UNESCO in a bilateral format.

For more than 20 years, the Republic of Azerbaijan has repeatedly made appeals to UNESCO to implement this mission and sent numerous letters in this regard. Unfortunately, such a mission was not carried out, and the only reason was Armenia. As an organization, UNESCO itself mentioned this fact in its report for 2005. Thus, emphasizing that the Azerbaijani lands are under the occupation of Armenia, UNESCO acknowledged that the visit was prevented by Armenia.

As for the UNESCO mission to Armenia, the Azerbaijani side has repeatedly brought to the attention of UNESCO and the international community the destruction of the cultural heritage belonging to the Azerbaijani people in Armenia. Our country's NGOs have recently submitted detailed information on the destruction to UNESCO. These reports included photographs and other evidence of the wreckage.

We believe that it is necessary to send a mission to Armenia to investigate the facts submitted by Azerbaijan to UNESCO. We hope that Armenia, will create conditions for the organization of the mission unlike its previous policy of preventing international missions from visiting the occupied territories," said the Ministry.
