There is significant progress in the peace talks with Armenia.

Axar.az reports that Elchin Amirbeyov, representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on special tasks, said this during his speech at the online seminar at the Hudson Institute of the United States.

"We have made important progress towards a peace agreement. We have never been so close to peace. Now both countries have a historic opportunity to finally close this chapter of hostility, change the situation in the South Caucasus region and turn the region into a place of good neighborliness, stability and peace. As you know, this process has been ongoing for almost thirty years, but last December both countries decided that the most effective and most promising format to continue the negotiations is a direct bilateral format. "Since then, a number of important achievements have been achieved, including building trust," said the representative of the President of Azerbaijan.

According to Amirbeyov, if we look at the text of the peace agreement on the negotiation table, the parties are very close to its completion.

"Azerbaijan intends to do everything possible to meet the expectations of the entire international community, as well as to resolve once and for all the problem underlying this conflict, that is, the issue of Armenia's territorial claims to Azerbaijan. Therefore, we hope that the remaining difficulties will be properly resolved in a short period of time. and we will be able to achieve a secure, lasting and irreversible peace".

Talking about the possible time of signing the peace agreement, Amirbeyov noted that it is inappropriate to announce the time.

"It will mostly depend on the ability and willingness of the Armenian side to eliminate the only remaining obstacle on the way to the conclusion of the peace agreement, that is, the territorial claims against Azerbaijan established in the Constitution. As already mentioned, most of the text of the peace agreement has been agreed. All the remaining issues can be implemented , but we cannot ignore the most existential cause of this conflict, namely the territorial claims in the Armenian Constitution, and sign a peace agreement. Therefore, the sooner this issue is resolved, the sooner we will reach a final decision," said the representative of the President of Azerbaijan said.
