The second and final solar eclipse of 2026 will occur on August 12.
Axar.az reports that the information was provided by the N. Tusi Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory of Azerbaijan's Ministry of Science and Education.
According to the observatory, the eclipse will be a total solar eclipse. The path of totality will pass over Iceland, Spain, northwestern Portugal, Greenland, and parts of the North Atlantic Ocean. A partial solar eclipse will be visible across much of Europe, parts of North America, sections of the Pacific Ocean, and northwestern Africa.
The eclipse will begin at 7:34 p.m. Baku time and end at 11:57 p.m., with the maximum phase occurring at 9:46 p.m. It is expected to last about five hours in total, while the period of totality will last approximately seven minutes.
The observatory explained that the type of solar eclipse depends on two main factors: the relative positions of the Sun, Moon, and Earth in space, and the observer's location. A solar eclipse occurs when the new Moon passes through one of the points where the Moon's orbit intersects Earth's orbital plane and the Sun, Moon, and Earth align. These intersection points are known in astronomy as nodes.
A total solar eclipse can only be observed by those located within the Moon's umbral shadow. The farther an observer is from the center of the shadow, the smaller the portion of the Sun that is obscured, with observers in the penumbra seeing only a partial eclipse. If the Moon is slightly away from a node, a total eclipse cannot occur, and only a partial eclipse is visible regardless of the observer's location. Likewise, if the Moon is near its apogee—the farthest point in its orbit from Earth—an annular rather than a total solar eclipse occurs because the Moon appears too small to completely cover the Sun.
Like the first solar eclipse of 2026, the August 12 eclipse will not be visible from Azerbaijan. The last solar eclipse observed from Azerbaijan was the partial eclipse of October 25, 2022. The next eclipse visible from the country will occur on August 2, 2027. Although it will be a total solar eclipse, Azerbaijan will lie outside the path of totality, allowing observers to see only the partial phase.
