People’s Artist Tofiq Bakıxanov dies at 95

Prominent Azerbaijani composer and People’s Artist Professor Tofiq Bakıxanov has died at the age of 95.

Axar.az informs, citing Rеport, that born on December 8, 1930, in the family of renowned tar player and People’s Artist Ahmad Bakıxanov, and Tofiq Bakıxanov received his early musical education at the 10-year music school affiliated with the Azerbaijan State Conservatory.

He later studied violin and composition at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory, now the Baku Music Academy.

Bakıxanov was awarded the title of People’s Artist in 1990 and received the “Shohrat,” “Sharaf” and 1st Class “Labor” orders for his contributions to Azerbaijan’s musical culture.

He taught at the Baku Music Academy for more than five decades.

His works included three ballets, three musical comedies, 25 concertos for tar and other instruments with symphony orchestra, eight symphonies, six symphonic poems, five symphonic mugams, numerous sonatas and more than 100 songs and romances.
