Sixty-eight historical and cultural monuments in Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur were completely destroyed during the occupation, while 114 others suffered extensive damage.

Axar.az reports, citing Modеrn.az, that the State Service for Protection, Development and Restoration of Cultural Heritage under Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Culture said that the material damage caused to 434 monuments has been assessed.

According to the calculations, the total damage caused to these monuments amounted to 700.154 million manats.

According to the State Service, Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage suffered extensive damage during the nearly 30-year occupation. Some monuments were completely destroyed, while others were subjected to vandalism and damaged to varying degrees.

An inventory found that Islamic religious monuments had been destroyed, desecrated and, in some cases, used as stables.

Nine registered mausoleums, three cemeteries and seven mosques in the liberated territories were completely destroyed. In addition, 25 mosques, 14 mausoleums and two crypts suffered varying degrees of damage.

Christian religious monuments were also subjected to vandalism. It was determined that two churches in the Khojavand district had been used as military positions by the occupying forces, while various inscriptions in Cyrillic and Armenian scripts had been carved into the walls of some monuments.
