The detention of three Azerbaijani nationals — Rashad Ibrahimov, Gadir Guliyev and Valeh Hummatov — in connection with a ship accident in Northern Cyprus has been extended by another seven days.

Axar.az reports, citing Repоrt, that the information was provided by Orkhan Hasanoglu, chairman of the Azerbaijan-Cyprus Friendship Society.

According to Hasanoglu, police told the court that more than 320 people have been questioned so far as part of the investigation.

“The investigation is focusing on the ship’s technical condition, damage reportedly sustained to the bow on June 17, and the subsequent repair work. Authorities are examining whether the damage and repairs contributed to the ship’s sinking. They are also determining whether the relevant authorities were notified about the repairs and how many voyages the ship made afterward,” he said.

Hasanoglu said underwater search operations are still underway, with efforts focused on locating the black box and voyage data recorder (VDR) of the Optimus Prime.

“As part of the investigation, 17 pieces of the vessel recovered from the shore are expected to be sent for examination. Investigators also plan to conduct inquiries in Turkiye, including at a ship repair facility in Adana,” he said.

The Azerbaijan-Cyprus Friendship Society is closely monitoring the investigation into the causes and circumstances of the tragedy and the protection of the rights of Ibrahimov, Guliyev and Hummatov.

“The guilt of the detained individuals has not been established by a final court ruling,” Hasanoglu said.

The ship accident occurred off the coast of Kyrenia in Northern Cyprus on August 30. A total of 239 people were rescued, while the death toll reached 15. Search efforts are continuing for 13 passengers who remain missing. Nine people, including three Azerbaijani nationals, have been detained in connection with the incident.
