A bust of National Leader Heydar Aliyev has been damaged in Tbilisi, APА reported, citing the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Axar.az informs that according to the Ministry, a foreign citizen has been detained in connection with the incident, which occurred on September 21. An investigation into the incident is underway under Part 1 of Article 187 of the Georgian Criminal Code. The article provides for liability for the intentional damage or destruction of another person’s property causing substantial damage.

The detainee’s lawyer confirmed that the person is a citizen of Armenia. According to the lawyer, the person, who is over 40 years old, arrived in Tbilisi as a tourist and is currently exercising the right to remain silent. A court has ordered the person to be held in custody.

The bust is currently covered for restoration. According to the information, part of the face of the monument was damaged. The means used to commit the act and the motive have not yet been disclosed.

Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Georgia, Faig Guliyev, said that investigative and procedural measures related to the incident are continuing at the relevant Georgian authorities and that it is necessary to await the results of the investigation.
