Today marks the 35th anniversary of the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Axar.az reports that on October 18, 1991, the Supreme Council adopted the Constitutional Act on the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The Constitutional Act referred to the Declaration of Independence dated May 28, 1918, and the August 30, 1991, declaration by the Supreme Council on the restoration of the state independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan. It established that the Republic of Azerbaijan is the successor to the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
The Azerbaijani people established an independent republic in the early 20th century. In 1991, the Republic of Azerbaijan restored its independence as the successor to the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
In May 1992, the National Assembly approved the state anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan, composed by Uzeyir Hajibeyov with lyrics by Ahmad Javad. Shortly afterward, it approved the tricolour flag and the state emblem featuring an eight-pointed star with a flame at its centre.
At a plenary session on October 15, 2021, the Azerbaijani Parliament adopted a new law on Independence Day. On the same day, President Ilham Aliyev signed the law.
Following the law’s approval, October 18, previously known as State Independence Day, was renamed the Day of Restoration of Independence.
It should be noted that the Day of Restoration of Independence is observed annually in Azerbaijan as a public holiday and a working day.
