Six years have passed since Minjivan, a historic settlement in Azerbaijan’s Zangilan district, was liberated from Armenian occupation.
Axar.az recalls that on October 21, 2020, Minjivan settlement, along with the villages of Babayli, Uchuncu Agali, Saril, Khumarly, Hajalli, Khurama, Jahangirbayli, Turabad, Ichari Mushlan, Giraq Mushlan, Malikli, Udgun and Baharli in Zangilan district; Balyand, Papi, Tulus and Tinli in Jabrayil district; and Gechagozlu, Ashagi Seyidahmadli and Zargar in Fuzuli district, were liberated from occupation.
Minjivan is located on a plain along the Araz River. It was established between 1795 and 1798, when families from the village of Minjivan in South Azerbaijan settled there after a famine. The new settlement was named after their original village. In the 19th century, two villages named Minjivan were recorded in Zangezur district.
The settlement was occupied by Armenian armed forces in 1993. Before the occupation, it had residential buildings, schools, libraries, kindergartens and a railway station. Following the First Karabakh War, Armenian forces destroyed all residential buildings, schools, libraries and kindergartens and dismantled and removed the railway. They sold some of the railway tracks and used others to build anti-tank fortifications.
