Sabina Aliyeva re-elected as Azerbaijan’s ombudsman

Sabina Aliyeva has been re-elected as Azerbaijan’s Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsman).

Axar.az reports that the issue of electing the country’s Human Rights Commissioner was discussed at today’s parliamentary session.

Following the debate, Aliyeva was re-elected for another term by a majority vote in the Milli Majlis.

After her re-election, Aliyeva took the oath of office, pledging to perform her duties with honour and dignity.

It should be noted that three candidates had been nominated for the position in a document submitted to parliament by President Ilham Aliyev: Sabina Aliyeva, Jeyhun Garajayev and Elshana Valiyeva.

Under Azerbaijan’s Law on the Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsman), the commissioner is elected for a seven-year term.

Thirty days before the incumbent’s term expires, the President submits three candidates to the Milli Majlis. Parliament must make a decision on the appointment within 15 days.

The same person cannot be elected to the position more than twice.

Aliyeva was first elected Ombudsman on November 29, 2019, from among three candidates nominated by the President of Azerbaijan.
