Lake Urmia records several-fold increase in water volume

The water volume of Lake Urmia has reached 2.67 billion cubic meters, several times higher than during the same period last year.

Axar.az reports that the figure was announced by the West Azerbaijan Regional Water Company.

“Sufficient rainfall and the regulated release of water from dams have compensated for the sharp declines recorded in previous years,” the company said.

It should be noted that Lake Urmia’s maximum ecological (historical ideal) water capacity is estimated at around 30–32 billion cubic meters, while its surface area once exceeded approximately 5,000 square kilometers.
