Citizens of the canton of Glarus in Switzerland participating in an open-air assembly on Sunday said they were opposed to the introduction of a burqa ban.
Axar.az reports citing to German press agency DPA that at the meeting in a central square in the German-speaking canton of Glarus, residents spoke out against punishing Muslim women for wearing a burqa - a garment worn by some Muslim women that covers the body and face - in public.
The open-air assembly is an annual event in Glarus. Earlier, the government and the canton's legislature had rejected such a ban.
The Italian-speaking canton of Ticino is the only one of 26 in Switzerland that voted, a year back, for a burqa ban.
