It’s ‘literally raining green crystals’ in Hawaii, thanks to the recent Kilauea volcano eruption on the Big Island. Locals took to social media after reportedly discovering the mineral gems, known as olivines, among lava and ash on the ground.

Meteorologist Erin Jordan said: ‘Friends of mine live in Hawaii, right next to the area impacted by the most recent lava flows. ‘In the midst of the destruction nearby and stress of the unknown, they woke up to this, tiny pieces of olivine all over the ground. ‘It is literally raining gems. Nature is truly amazing.’

Another one wrote on Twitter: ‘Hawaii’s volcano is spraying the surrounding areas with gemstones.’ Cheryl Gansecki, a geologist at the University of Hawaii-Hilo that studies the composition of Kilauea’s lava, told Mashable that there were two reasons the gems were being discovered more frequently because of the eruptions. She said: ‘The lava that is erupting now is very crystal-rich and it is quite possible that residents might be finding olivine.

‘It can be carried in the pumice [rapidly cooled lava] pieces that have been rained all over the area or left behind when weaker lava rocks are crushed.’ A Brit keen to get her hands on the stones wrote on Twitter: ‘If only it would rain olivines on the Isle of Man’. The volcano eruption started in early May and have destroyed hundreds of homes on Hawaii’s Big Island, with no signs of slowing down.

Olivine is a green mineral wish in its magnesium rich form is a peridot. Peridot has been used for centuries to make jewellery, and in some cases, can be worth as much as $450 per carat. However, Polar Nerd wrote on Twitter that the gemstones ‘aren’t really worthy anything, but they are getting grabbed up by opportunity seekers and sold all over the internet.'
