Azerbaijan considers the proposal of Armenia to sign a peace treaty, in which a number of important articles have not yet been agreed, unrealistic and unacceptable.

Axar.az reports that Elchin Amirbeyov, representative of the President of Azerbaijan on special tasks, said this in an interview with "Berliner Zeitung" newspaper.

Amirbeyov, while answering the journalist's question about how official Baku approached the statement of Armenia's ambassador to Germany that Armenia is ready to sign a peace agreement with Azerbaijan tomorrow, stressed that he doubted the sincerity of this statement.

"The proposal to sign an unfinished, half-finished agreement tomorrow is not only unrealistic and unacceptable, but also an attempt to create a wrong opinion in the public. The parties should agree on several important provisions of the draft agreement that are still open, and the document is incomplete without them," said the representative of the President of Azerbaijan.

According to him, the main obstacle on the way to achieving peace is the territorial claims to the internationally recognized sovereign territory of Azerbaijan reflected in the Armenian constitution.

According to E. Amirbeyov, ignoring this problem is equivalent to not seeing the elephant in the room.

"With this, Armenia wants to confuse the international community, pretending to show that it is constructively participating in the peace process, but in fact it is prolonging the time and making the peace process deadlocked. As soon as Armenia started receiving an unlimited amount of diplomatic, economic and military aid from the West, including the EU, the United States and individual EU states, Armenia lost interest in constructive participation in the negotiations, and it seems that achieving peace with Azerbaijan is no longer for them. is not a priority," he stressed.

Answering the journalist's question about the possibility of the parties to move the issue of opening the Zangezur Corridor out of the framework of the peace agreement and postponing the amendments to the Armenian constitution to the period after the signing of the peace agreement, Amirbayov noted that it is completely wrong to draw a parallel between these two issues, because they is quite different in its importance for the achievement of lasting peace.

"The territorial claims of Armenia against Azerbaijan have been the main cause of the conflict since the first day, and in order to achieve lasting peace, this problem must be eliminated once and for all. This cannot be done without changing the Armenian constitution. If the Armenian constitution remains in its current form, the peace agreement will be short-lived, as any new Armenian leadership opposed to peace with Azerbaijan will simply denounce the agreement on the grounds that it is inconsistent with the legally superior constitution. In other words, Azerbaijan wants to sign the peace agreement not with Prime Minister Pashinyan, but with Armenia," he said.

According to Amirbeyov, this is precisely why Azerbaijan cannot leave any legal loopholes that could lead to new tragedies and the revival of the conflict over time, so we must eliminate the main cause of the long-term Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.

As for the Zangezur corridor, the representative of the President of Azerbaijan added that official Baku still attaches great importance to its opening. "Azerbaijan, by agreeing to exclude this issue from the framework of the peace agreement, expressed its desire not to give a reason to the villains who ignore us to use the unresolved essence of this issue to present Azerbaijan as a party that harms the general progress," Amirbeyov concluded.
