Markov: Trump won’t focus on South Caucasus

For Trump, the South Caucasus will be peripheral in terms of priorities. He will not actively influence the region. Trump will try to improve relations with Russia.

Axar.az reports that this was stated by Russian political scientist Sergey Markov in an interview with Moscow-Baku.

"If he can help resolve the situation around Ukraine, then Moscow will have a significantly freer hand for broader activities in the South Caucasus. This means that Azerbaijan's position in the region will strengthen, as Russia has effective allied relations with Baku in the region. And to some extent, Russia's tense relations with Armenia will continue. It is known that Macron is trying to pursue an active policy in the South Caucasus. However, Trump has a rather critical attitude toward the French president. The conflicting relationship between them may lead to a reduction in the French president's activity in the South Caucasus," he said.

According to Markov, Pashinyan may become disappointed with his attempts to gain support from the West and sit down at the table for real negotiations with Baku on a peace agreement:

"Pashinyan is still waiting for real support from the West. Additionally, it is highly likely that Armenia will not leave the CSTO, as it is not advantageous for them. The West is not in favor of Armenia leaving the CSTO, as it sees Armenia as a spy and is focused on destroying the CSTO from within. Furthermore, it cannot be forgotten that the President of Azerbaijan has expressed very positive views about Trump before the U.S. elections, without interfering in U.S. domestic affairs. This indicates that Trump holds a positive attitude towards Azerbaijan. At the same time, Pashinyan finds it easier to engage with Democrats. In the case of Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan, Trump prefers to choose the President of Azerbaijan and respects him. Therefore, the Armenian Prime Minister will have no choice but to continue swinging between Moscow, Washington, and Brussels."
