May 9: Victory Day over fascism

Today, May 9, is Victory Day over fascism.

Axar.az reports that on September 1, 1939, fascist Germany occupied Poland. Thus began the Second World War, which was the bloodiest war in human history.

On June 22, 1941, Hitler's Germany attacked the USSR, which included Azerbaijan. The war ended on May 9, 1945, with the lowering of the fascist flag over the Reichstag building in Berlin and the raising of the USSR flag.

660 thousand people from Azerbaijan participated in this war. Azerbaijani divisions fought from the Caucasus to Berlin, about 130 Azerbaijanis were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, 30 people were awarded the Order of Honor, and 170 thousand of our compatriots were awarded various orders and medals of the USSR. The names of twice Hero of the Soviet Union, Major General Hazi Aslanov, Heroes of the Soviet Union Israfil Mammadov, Aslan Vazirov, Adil Guliyev, Ziya Bunyadov, Garay Asadov, Huseynbala Aliyev, Gafur Mammadov, Malik Maharramov, Mehdi Huseynzade, Generals Mahmud Abilov, Akim Abbasov, Tarlan Aliyarbekov, Hajibaba Zeynalov, and many others are written in golden letters in the history of this war.

Azerbaijani oil was also one of the decisive factors in the Great Patriotic War. Thus, in 1941, the largest amount of oil in the history of Azerbaijan was produced - 23.5 million tons, which constituted 71.4% of the oil produced in the USSR. During the war, Azerbaijani oil workers supplied the country with 75 million tons of oil, 22 million tons of gasoline, and other oil products.

It should be noted that the victory over fascism is also celebrated as an official state holiday in Azerbaijan.
