Three European wins mark historic week for Azerbaijan

European club competitions' first qualifying round first-leg matches have gone down as the most successful week in the history of Azerbaijani football.

Axar.az reports, citing the official website of the Azerbaijan’s Professional Football League, that all three Azerbaijani clubs won their matches, marking only the second time this has happened in the country's history in UEFA competitions.

In the UEFA Champions League, Sabah defeated TNS (Wales) 2-0. In the UEFA Europa League, Qarabag beat Vestri (Iceland) 3-0, while in the UEFA Conference League, Zira also secured a 3-0 victory over Torpedo Kutaisi (Georgia).

Previously, Azerbaijani clubs had achieved at least three wins in the same week only once. In the 2013/14 season, Inter defeated Mariehamn (Finland) 2-0, Qarabag beat Metalurg (North Macedonia) 1-0, and Khazar Lankaran overcame Sliema (Malta) 1-0. All three matches were second-leg fixtures of the UEFA Europa League first qualifying round and were played on July 11, 2013.

Although Azerbaijani clubs recorded three victories again 13 years later, this time they achieved a superior goal difference. In 2013, the three clubs kept clean sheets and scored a total of four goals. This year, they have again kept clean sheets but doubled that tally, scoring eight goals.
