The ball used for Argentine footballer Diego Maradona's famous "Hand of God" goal and celebrated solo effort against England at the 1986 FIFA World Cup sold for $3.35 million at auction.

Axar.az reports, citing Anadolu Agency, that according to Heritage Auctions, the Adidas Azteca was used during Argentina's 2-1 quarterfinal victory over England, in which Maradona scored two of the most memorable goals in World Cup history.

The Dallas-based auction house sold the ball, which experts matched to photographs taken during the match, for $3.35 million Saturday.

The final price was well below the pre-auction estimate of at least $10 million.

It should be noted that in the quarter-final of the 1986 World Cup, Diego Maradona used his hand to put an aerial pass into the goal, and the referee allowed the goal to stand. As a result, Argentina defeated England 2-1 and advanced to the semi-finals.

Following the incident, Maradona said the goal had been scored by the “Hand of God.”
