Two Azerbaijani wrestlers reach world championship finals

The World Wrestling Championships in Greco-Roman, freestyle, and women’s wrestling are being held in Astana. The competition, featuring nearly 900 athletes from 135 countries, is taking place at the Barys Arena sports complex from October 24 to November 1.

Axar.az reports that athletes will compete for medals in three wrestling disciplines over the nine-day event. Astana is hosting the World Wrestling Championships for the second time, following the 2019 edition.

On the opening day, Azerbaijan’s Greco-Roman wrestlers Eldaniz Azizli and Sanan Suleymanov reached the finals.

Two other Azerbaijani wrestlers, Murad Mammadov (60 kg) and Gurban Gurbanov (82 kg), were eliminated after losing in the quarter-finals. Because their opponents did not reach the finals, the Azerbaijani wrestlers also lost the chance to compete in the repechage rounds.

On October 25, three more Azerbaijani representatives will enter the competition: Murad Ahmadiev (97 kg), Sarkhan Mammadov (130 kg) and two-time world champion Ulvu Ganizada (72 kg). On October 26, Hasrat Jafarov (67 kg), Nihat Mammadli (63 kg), and Islam Abbasov (87 kg) will compete in their opening bouts.
