Indonesia school collapse death toll rises to 54

The death toll from the collapse of the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in East Java, Indonesia, has risen to 54, with 13 people still missing.

Axar.az, citing BBC, reports that the two-storey building collapsed during prayers while under construction, making it Indonesia’s deadliest disaster of 2025.

Officials suspect the cause was an unstable foundation, though investigations continue. Rescue efforts are ongoing under difficult conditions, with narrow spaces hampering progress. The school, a traditional pesantren, may not have had proper permits for the construction work.
