Gas leak caused blast in Bandar Abbas, state media say

A gas leak caused a deadly explosion in a building in Iran’s southern port city of Bandar Abbas, killing one person and injuring 14, according to Iranian media.

Axar.az, citing Reuters, reports that a separate gas blast in Ahvaz near the Iraqi border killed four people.

The incidents come at a time of heightened political tension, as Iran faces internal unrest over protests and mounting pressure from the United States over its nuclear program.

Iranian officials denied social media claims that a Revolutionary Guard commander was targeted in the Bandar Abbas explosion. Israeli officials told Reuters they were not involved.

The blasts added to a tense atmosphere after President Donald Trump announced the deployment of warships toward the Gulf and signaled he was considering possible action against Iran. Bandar Abbas sits on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route, and has previously suffered a major port explosion.
