Former cleric Vorontsov detained in Almaty

Former cleric Yakov Vorontsov, known for publicly criticizing the war in Ukraine and the stance of the Russian Orthodox Church, has been detained in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Axar.az reports, citing Kazakh media, that the Almaty Investigative Department conducted a search at his residence and discovered a prohibited substance.

Vorontsov is known for criticizing the Russian Orthodox Church and Russia’s war in Ukraine, as well as for attempting to establish an Orthodox Church in Kazakhstan independent of Moscow.
