Agreement with SOCAR to provide energy security

The objective of the Government of Georgia is to ensure uninterrupted and stable natural gas supplies for the country, Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze said.

According to him, together with our friend and strategic partner – Azerbaijan - means enabling to receive additional amounts of natural gas and fill the deficit were found, on good terms. The agreement was already reached.

"As for the company Gazprom, talks have focused on the terms of natural gas transit from Russia to Armenia through the Georgian owned infrastructure. Considering that the transit contract is annual, already since 2004, these negotiations have been taking place every year. In addition, during the negotiations, Georgia has also explored the possibility of purchasing additional natural gas volume from Gazprom in case the other supply sources would not have covered the deficit. Considering the agreement reached with SOCAR, there is no need for purchasing additional gas volume from “Gazprom Export”. With this agreement, the Government of Georgia has ensured the best possible terms for the stable and uninterrupted gas supply and energy security of the country", he added.
