Argentina declared Iran’s chargé d’affaires persona non grata

Argentina’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declared Mohsen Soltani Tehrani, Iran’s chargé d’affaires in Buenos Aires, persona non grata, ordering him to leave the country within 48 hours.

Axar.az reports, citing Argentinian media, that the decision comes in response to an Iranian statement which Argentina described as containing 'false, offensive, and unfounded accusations,' following Buenos Aires’ designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.

Argentina emphasized that Iran’s statements represent “unacceptable interference” in its internal affairs and cited historical grievances, including Tehran’s lack of cooperation in the AMIA bombing investigations and noncompliance with international arrest warrants.

The expulsion, framed under Article 9 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, moves the dispute beyond verbal protests into formal diplomatic action.

Previously, Iran condemned Argentina’s decision under the Javier Milei administration to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization, calling the move illegal and damaging to bilateral relations.
