Rescuers in Myanmar say a powerful explosion at a building storing mining explosives has killed more than 45 people and injured dozens more in the country’s conflict-hit northeast.
Axar.az reports, citing Associated Press, the blast occurred on Sunday around noon in Kaungtup village, Namhkam township, killing at least 46 people, including six children, who had been recovered by Sunday evening, while around 74 injured people were taken to the hospital as search and rescue operations continued.
Authorities said gelignite used for mining had been stored at the site and that an investigation is underway into the cause of the explosion.
Gelignite, commonly used in mining, can become unstable if improperly stored over time.
