West Texas fugitive dead after killing 1, injuring 10

An over 30-hour manhunt in West Texas ended Friday after a fugitive suspected of shooting at police earlier in the week killed one person and injured 10 others before dying by suicide.

Axar.az reports, citing CNN, police identified the suspect as 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal of Odessa, who had been wanted since Wednesday following a shooting and high-speed chase in which he fired at officers during a pursuit.

Authorities said the situation escalated on Friday morning in Midland when officers responded to reports of gunfire and located Villarreal, who then fired at passing vehicles and bystanders before barricading himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic.

When officers entered the building following a SWAT response, the suspect was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The lone fatality was identified by the city of Midland as 62-year-old Ed Scott.

Midland Memorial Hospital said nine additional victims were treated, with several discharged and others undergoing surgery or continuing care.

Authorities said the FBI, Texas Rangers, and local law enforcement are continuing to investigate the incident.
