The death toll from the powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela last week has risen to 1,719, National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said Monday.
Axar.az reports, citing CNN, that Rodriguez said at least 22,619 people have been affected by the disaster, including 5,034 who were injured.
He added that 855 buildings sustained damage, of which 189 collapsed completely.
According to Rodriguez, authorities have recorded 609 aftershocks since the earthquakes struck on Wednesday, including one that was widely felt on Monday but caused no significant damage.
The US Geological Survey has estimated there is a 44% chance that the final death toll could reach 10,000 or more.
