Turkiye's opposition leader to form new party

Turkiye's opposition leader, Ozgur Ozel, said on Tuesday he will resign from the main opposition party and form a new one.

Axar.az reports according to Turkish media, Ozel made the announcement during a meeting of the Republican People's Party's (CHP) parliamentary group, saying the new party would become Turkiye's main opposition force based on the number of MPs joining it.

"I came to this podium carrying the sadness of a farewell whose time has come," Ozel said. "Together with our MPs, we are taking the first step in founding our new party."

He added that once the necessary legal procedures are completed, the new party will become the largest opposition party in the Turkish Grand National Assembly.

"As I bid farewell today to the Republican People's Party's parliamentary podium, we are by no means leaving the podium of the main opposition party," Ozel said.
