Winds ease as Greece fights fifth day of wildfires - Video

Greek firefighters made progress on Tuesday in battling a wildfire that has burned for five days near Athens, as weaker winds allowed more firefighting aircraft to operate.

Axar.az reports, citing France24, that more than 30 aircraft and 575 firefighters were deployed to fight the blaze near the coastal village of Psatha, around 60 kilometres northwest of Athens.

"The situation has clearly improved compared to the last few days, but there are still many scattered hotspots, which means that forces remain on site to prevent a possible flare-up," fire department spokesperson Vassilis Vathrakoyannis said.

The fire has damaged villages along the Gulf of Corinth, including Porto Germeno, where dozens of homes were destroyed or damaged.

Authorities warned that the risk of new fires remains high, with the greater Athens region, Evia and several Aegean islands placed under near-maximum fire risk for Wednesday.

The wildfires have killed five firefighters since last week, including two who died after a helicopter accident west of Athens.
