Zelensky: Ukraine targets ballistic missile by 2027

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine aims to develop its own ballistic missile capabilities and a new anti-ballistic missile defense system by 2026–2027.

Axar.az reports that Zelensky made the announcement on his X account.

Following a meeting on the country's ballistic missile program and the FREYJA anti-ballistic missile initiative, Zelensky said officials had reviewed progress, set implementation timelines and assigned responsibilities to accelerate the projects.

"Developing one's own ballistic capabilities and creating a new anti-ballistic system is a task that only a tiny minority of countries worldwide have managed to accomplish. Ukraine has this capability," Zelensky said.

He added that Ukrainian scientists and defense manufacturers had reached the necessary level to achieve the goal.

"We expect Ukraine to achieve the necessary results in 2026–2027," he said.

Zelensky said the meeting also focused on securing critical components, expanding technological cooperation with international partners and increasing domestic production.

He added that Ukraine is working with partners on PAC-2 and PAC-3 missiles and called for more countries to join what he described as an "Anti-Ballistic Coalition."

"FREYJA is making progress, and that is important. Europe needs a shared and truly large-scale capability to defend effectively against any ballistic threats," Zelensky said.
