At least 27 people were injured after a fireworks shell deviated from its intended trajectory and fell into an area occupied by spectators during the Castell de l’Olla fireworks festival in Altea, Alicante, Spain.

Axar.az reports, citing Spanish media, that the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, August 9, during the 40th anniversary edition of the annual event, which attracted around 100,000 people to the beach and surrounding areas.

Fourteen of the injured were taken to hospitals, including 11 who were transferred to the burn unit at Alicante’s Doctor Balmis University General Hospital. Two others were treated for burns at Marina Baixa Hospital, while another person with contusions was taken to IMED Hospital. One person remained hospitalized as of Sunday morning.

No serious injuries were reported.

The accident occurred when a shell launched from a platform at sea traveled farther than expected and landed on the sand near spectators.

According to event organizers, many of the injuries occurred during the panic that followed the incident, when spectators rushed away from the area, causing falls and bruises.

Authorities and organizers have opened an investigation to determine why the shell deviated from its planned trajectory. More than 1,500 kilograms of gunpowder were used in this year's fireworks display.
