At least 44 dead after ferry capsizes on Zimbabwe’s Lake

At least 44 people have died after an overloaded ferry capsized on Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba.

Axar.az reports, citing The Independent, that the ferry is believed to have been carrying at least 114 adults and five crew members when it overturned on Tuesday.

Zimbabwe’s disaster management agency said 77 people had been rescued.

Police said bodies had been recovered from the lake but did not provide details on the number of injured or missing.

Authorities said the ferry had a carrying capacity of 90 people. The actual number of passengers remains unclear because the figures only include people who bought tickets, while children below the ticketing age may also have been aboard.

State broadcaster ZBC reported that children were among those killed.

An underwater search-and-rescue team has been deployed, while speedboats and a helicopter have been involved in the rescue operation.
