Fire and explosion hit munitions plant near Rome

An explosion occurred at the former Simmel Difesa munitions plant in Colleferro, near Rome, on Thursday, with no injuries reported.

Axar.az reports, citing ANSA, that the incident occurred in the powder pressing department of KNDS Ammo Italy while the plant was operating.

The fire triggered the facility’s fire-safety system, allowing all 24 employees on duty to evacuate before the explosion.

The blast destroyed the roof of the affected section, which helped direct the force of the explosion upward.

Firefighters, police, medical services and civil protection teams responded to the scene.

Authorities said the situation outside the affected area remained under control, and no evacuation of the nearby outlet was required. Investigators have ruled out sabotage and the Velletri prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the incident.

KNDS said the circumstances of the accident are under investigation and that it could not yet provide confirmed details about its cause or the exact sequence of events.
