Italy has refused to accept three asylum seekers whom Germany planned to transfer under the EU’s Dublin rules, triggering a new dispute between Berlin and Rome.

Axar.az reports, citing Die Bild, that the transfers, scheduled for August 19, involve migrants whose asylum applications Germany considers to be Italy’s responsibility.

One case concerns a 22-year-old Somali woman who reportedly entered the EU through Italy before travelling to Germany.

Germany considers transfers to Italy possible again since the EU Migration and Asylum Pact fully took effect on June 12. Italian authorities, however, argue that the cases date from before that date and are therefore not covered by the new rules.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said Rome and Berlin had agreed to clear older cases and that previous figures had effectively been “reset to zero.”

German authorities say that one transfer request received no response from Italy within the required deadline, which under the Dublin rules meant consent was deemed to have been given.

Piantedosi has also suggested that Italy could seek “compensation” by taking into account migrants brought to Italy by German NGO rescue ships.
